Weston Loney – The Emerald Isle

The covid lock downs turned everything upside down, our personal world’s felt smaller. During that strange chapter I got to know the exceptionally talented Weston Loney. My first experience of Weston was thanks to the equally talented Matt Good. The conclusion of the encounter was Weston playing the role of a serial killer in my daughter’s short film.

At this point Weston lived in a local manse half a mile deeper into the country down countryside. A fan of covid sourdough Weston was also a great community encourager. From social distanced songs around the fire pit to shouting, what I think was “DC you are a total ‘winner’” as I passed on my daily 5km

Weston Loney (in the form of Hunkpapa) supplied the soundtrack of my lockdown chapter. It’s now impossible to listen to a Hunkpapa song and not be transported back to the local lockdown summer experience.

Weston is one of those naturally talented musicians who can pick up and instrument and hold an audience. He has also worked with the likes of KT Tunstall and Mumford & Sons. Add to this Weston’s comedic timing and you have quite a live performance.

Weston’s support for the Limelight gig were Limerick-based folk band Kingfishr. Trio Edmond Keogh, Eoghan “McGoo” McGrath & Eoin Fitzgibbon gripped the awaiting audience with a fantastic set. The band already have an impressive fan base given the number of requests shouted to the stage.

Fujifilm X-T5

I haven’t had much chance to get to know the new Fujifilm X-T5. Capturing an event with a new camera adds another level of complexity. Music photography with the Fujifilm X-T5 involves a relatively simply setup. The 33mm and the 56mm lenses, spot metering, fast lenses take a bit of the pressure off.

It’s over three years since I captured a live music performance. A combination of a new camera system and a 3 year sabbatical sounds like an excuse. It is.
